This is what stopping eating meat one day a week can do for you (and the world)
It is well known that a correct vegan diet can do wonders for your health. And not only that, but also for the environment. Now, for those of us who make this change, it seems almost impossible, either because of a matter of taste or habit. This is where we have news: you don’t have to go completely vegan. Eating a balanced diet on the frequency of one day a week eliminates animal protein, bring great benefits to your health and reduce your limited ecological footprint.
One day it might seem too little to make an impact, but the more people we dare to make the change, the more effective it will be. Many have chosen Monday as the perfect day to forget about meat. The reason? It works as the perfect detox to help your body balance the excesses of the weekend and start the week with energy. So … long live! Still not convinced? Perhaps learning about the benefits of this type of diet convinces you.
We list the top five:
1.It will reduce the risk of cancer
According to a report by the WHO (World Health Organization), processed meats have a high carcinogenic index. Eating only 50 grams of processed meat daily (the equivalent of one sausage or just under two slices of bacon) increases the risk of developing intestinal cancer by 18%.
2. It’s good for your heart
Animal products (mainly red meat) are high in saturated fat, compared to vegetable products that are either low in fat or contain unsaturated fat. These second ones are known as good fats ’because they actually help you to strengthen your heart.
3. Your diet, in general, will be higher in nutrients.
Vegetables and legumes are high in protein. A complete meal based on grains and vegetables has more fiber, minerals and nutrients than a carnivorous one, in addition to having, on average, fewer calories and will help you lose or maintain your weight
4. You will be helping the environment
Stopping eating meat one day a week not only has multiple benefits for your health, it also has environmental benefits. Surely you’ve heard it countless times: meat production is one of the main causes of global warming. So beyond all you create for the environment, the best and greatest action will be skipping meats for a day. The UN made it official by declaring that the best we can do to save the world from the effects of global warming is to switch to a vegan diet. If 10 million people worldwide stopped eating meat one day a week, it would translate to a reduction of 13 million tons of water use, we would save 5,700 hectares of land, 885 million calories and considerably reduce CO2 emissions
5.You will be helping to reduce world hunger
More than half of the world’s crops are used to feed farm animals, not people. This translates into a very large deficiency to feed the more than seven million inhabitants of the world (more than a billion live in conditions of malnutrition). How to help? Eating crops directly, instead of animals. It is a much more sustainable diet.
And well since at some point we can feel that inevitable craving to eat a hamburger: giant, succulent, hot, with gourmet bread or the typical one with sesame on top.
Despite being a high carbohydrate food, the hamburger is one of the most tempting and succulent dishes.
Currently, we can choose between numerous versions, each of those options offers to satisfy our whim of the moment. Which is why we share one of our hamburger recipes that is meat-free and a gastronomic delight:
Preparation time: 40 minutes
Proportion: for 4 people
Ingredients: 1 can of black beans; 1 egg, ½ chopped yellow onion; 3 cloves of garlic, minced; ½ green bell pepper in pieces; 1 tablespoon of cumin; ¼ teaspoon of salt; ¼ teaspoon of pepper; 1 tablespoon of chili sauce with garlic; ½ cup of breadcrumbs; buns.
Instructions: Preheat the oven to 200 ° C. Mix the beans with the egg, until you get a thick paste. Combine the onion, garlic, and green pepper in a food processor, and let it work for 30 seconds. Pour the ingredients into a mixing bowl. Then add the cumin, pepper, garlic sauce with chili and breadcrumbs. And until the mix is homogenized, take a few pieces to form a circle. Each circle, cook it for 10 minutes. Serve it with the seasonings of your choice.
